"Just Like Fire" by P!nk - Single Review

It's time to journey back down the rabbit hole, and through the looking glass, as pop rebel P!nk offers up her very first contribution to a live film soundtrack. Teaming up with renowned producer Max Martin, a man who has helped craft the artist's biggest career hits to date ("Raise Your Glass", "So What"), the pair have now collaborated on the compelling, acoustic-pop "Just Like Fire", the lead single off the soundtrack for Disney's upcoming Alice Through the Looking Glass.

"Just Like Fire" sounds like a complete mess on paper, but leave it to someone as talented as P!nk to somehow make all the diverse components come together as one empowering, cohesive and effective track. Starting as a primarily acoustic offering where the artist sings of overcoming obstacles and distancing herself from liars, the pop production and enjoyable hand claps eventually lead to an aggressive, radio-tailored chorus of embracing one's unique characteristics.

Over her extensive 15-year career, P!nk has effortlessly demonstrated that no one can handle an encouraging, bombastic power ballad better than she can. No matter what type of beat she's being supported by - folk, pop or hip-hip - the artist is still able to convey proper emotion with a convincing vocal delivery on the new song. "And people like to laugh at you cause they are all the same, mmm, mmm, see I would rather we just go our different way than play the game," she sings on a verse of individuality.

And just when you think "Just Like Fire" will just end up being the same uptempo pop track that P!nk has released many times in the past, she throws in a surprise towards the end of the single. During an impressive rap verse, the artist makes it clear that she can tackle any difficult situation with ease. The message of having the strength to overcome an obstacle is tried and true in the inspiring pop genre, but it has always sounded genuine coming from the "Just Like A Pill" songstress.

People may not take a film soundtrack contribution too seriously, and while the new "Just Like Fire" does come with questionable, colorful lyrical content, it does fit in perfectly with the movie it's supposed to be supporting. While we haven't received an official album single from P!nk since 2013, her only other new material being "Today's the Day" for The Ellen DeGeneres Show, the guitar-driven effort highlights a possible direction for the artist's anticipated seventh studio album.
