Who Is Fancy's "Boys Like You" feat. Ariana Grande & Meghan Trainor - Single Review

Talk about an unexpected collaboration. When singer/songwriter Who Is Fancy released his debut single "Goodbye" in early 2015, everyone wanted to know who the singer was. While the artist of the viral hit remained a mystery during the first few months of the song's release, Jake Hagood finally revealed his identity with a solid live performance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, and got the attention of artists like Ariana Grande and Meghan Trainor.

It seems those relationships have remained intact since then because Grande and Trainor both join Who Is Fancy on his follow-up effort "Boys Like You", a doo-wop styled pop track that finds an openly gay artist singing about flirting with the bad boys in his life. One may be quick to ask if mainstream radio is ready for a song by a man, for another man, but does that really matter in 2015? With its catchy, lovable beat and the added star power of its two featured pop divas, the new release could become a successful hit.

On top of its feel-good, relatable, sultry vibe, "Boys Like You" is carried by solid vocal performances from all three of the artists involved. Who Is Fancy tackles the topic of admiring from afar first, followed by Miss Trainor, and Miss Grande picking up the rear. The vocal chemistry between the artists is praise worthy, and helps aid in the track's overall charm. Though the song is a perfect fit for Trainor, it's nice to hear Fancy and Grande excel in the throwback environment as well.

The songwriting is also a fun, playful addition to Fancy's new single. The three artists reveal they are usually rule-abiding citizens... until that one type of boy comes strolling along. "Try try try, to follow the rules, I break everyone of them with boys like you, my oh my, doing what I always do, yea I'm crossing every line to get to boys like you," they belt on the radio-tailored chorus, perfect for a sing along with the top down on the highway.

"Boys Like You" is a very intriguing release. While new artists take some time to join forces with established acts, whether it be due to record label restraints or a low profile, Who Is Fancy seems to be one who doesn't play by the rules. He's grabbed two of today's brightest stars and used their talents to his advantage. Also, the pop song is a progressive move for radio airplay and everyday consumption. As stated before, the same-sex undertones aren't usually heard. It will be interesting to see how the song performs.

Who Is Fancy is a fairly new artist who has what it takes to make it in the competitive industry. His manager Scooter Braun (Justin Bieber, Carly Rae Jepsen) certainly seems to think so. His voice should have been enough to carry the cute and frisky "Boys Like You", but having Grande and Trainor on board certainly won't hurt either.
